Afghanistan: Long-hour battle with at least 6 dead in Kabul

by

The Taliban’s show-of-force operation came after US President Joe Biden announced on Monday that al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri had been killed in a UAV strike in Kabul.

Two members of the Taliban security forces were killed on Wednesday in a long-hour battle with jihadists that unfolded in a district of the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Another four members of the Taliban forces were wounded in the fighting in the Shiite district of Kart-e-Sahi, according to the de facto government’s interior ministry.

The Taliban rarely admits losses in their ranks.

According to the hardline Sunni regime’s interior ministry, the jihadists belonged to the Islamic State (IS) group.

The operation was carefully planned so that there would be no civilian casualties in the district, according to the same source.

However, videos posted on social media sites by Taliban supporters showed his forces using explosives to destroy an old house where IS fighters were said to be hiding.

The Taliban claimed that four IS members, who had intended to attack members of the Shiite minority, were killed and another captured in the battle.

The Taliban’s show-of-force operation came after US President Joe Biden announced on Monday that al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri had been killed in a UAV strike in Kabul.

Zawahri was reportedly hiding in a house owned by an associate of the Taliban’s interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani.

The US and the Taliban have accused each other since the raid of violating an agreement they signed in Doha in 2020 that paved the way for the withdrawal of foreign troops nearly a year ago.
