A man accused of shooting and killing dozens at an Independence Day parade outside Chicago has pleaded not guilty to hundreds of charges he now faces.

Robert Crimo III, 21, appeared in court on Wednesday for his arraignment. Klimo was indicted last week on 117 counts, including 21 counts of first-degree murder, 48 counts of attempted murder and 48 counts of aggravated assault.

Klimo has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

He faces life in prison on the charges. Illinois abolished the death penalty in 2011 and has not executed prisoners since 1999.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Ben Dillon, Crimo had previously admitted his actions when he was arrested.

Lake County State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart declined to comment on whether Crimo faces additional charges.

The Lake County Public Defender’s Office said it would not comment on the ongoing case.

Climo’s parents, Robert Climo Jr. and Dennis Pesina, quietly appeared in court behind their son’s back.

Prosecutors have not commented on whether Crimo’s parents will be charged with helping Climo obtain a gun.

“They wanted to show their support for their son,” his attorney, George Gomez, told reporters.

Gomez said his parents were “devastated” by what happened in the community but still intended to be there for their son.

A total of 7 people were killed and 48 injured in the attack in the wealthy suburb of Highland Park in Chicago, Illinois.

The youngest victim, eight-year-old Cooper Roberts, was paralyzed from the waist down when the bullet tore through his spinal cord. Roberts was recently transferred to a rehabilitation hospital after spending a month in intensive care.

Climo will appear in court again on November 1.
