Tensions continue after Nancy Pelosi’s visit
Eleven missiles launched by China towards Taiwan as the military prepares for war. It is noted that Chinese military exercises around Taiwan are ongoing, according to Chinese state media. At noon local time, state broadcaster CCTV reported: “Six important areas around the island have been designated by the Chinese military, and during this period all ships and aircraft should not enter the relevant sea areas and the airspace”.
The six identified zones surround the island, while some are located near key ports. Taiwan’s defense ministry said its armed forces were monitoring the environment. “We do not seek any escalation, but we do not back down when it comes to our security and sovereignty,” the ministry said.
At the same time, it seems that Taiwanese fishermen, as reported by the Associated Press, are the direct victims of the tension.
“This will definitely affect us, but what can we do?”, Taiwanese residents say.
The Associated Press spoke to residents in the city of Keelung as they went swimming in the Taiwan Strait, near where China says it carried out “precision missile strikes” as part of military exercises.

“Everyone should want money, not bullets. The economy is the most important thing,” said 63-year-old Lu Chuan-hsiong.
Fishing boat owner Chou Ting-tai said: “It is very close to us. This will definitely affect us, but what can we do?’
However, the director of the Fishermen’s Association, Chen Wen-ching, said the impact is large, as the exercises take place during the fishing season. “Many fishermen are complaining. They want to conduct exercises around here and we can’t do anything,” he said.
He continued: “We must inform our fishermen to leave the exercise area, to avoid situations that endanger lives and property losses.”
