The new and economical Peugeot 408 aspires to make an international career

It is the first in the history of the French group. With the new 408, Peugeot offers a new ‘fastback’ body at the top of the C segment. Its lines are sharp, the grille is body-coloured to match the front, and it’s adorned by the new badging of Peugeot with the lion’s head. The inverted shape of the rear bumper gives the profile a strong personality.

With a length of 4.69 m and with a long wheelbase that reaches 2.79 m, the new Peugeot 408 offers comfort to the passengers in the rear seat, a fact certified by the 188 mm. of the distance they have for their legs. With the same reasoning, the dimensions of the luggage compartment are equally generous, offering a total capacity of 536 liters, a value which can reach up to 1,611 liters, with the folding of the rear seats. The new Peugeot 408 has a height of 1.48 m and is distinguished by its silhouette, which also contributes decisively to the improvement of its aerodynamic performance.

For both the driver and its passengers, the Peugeot 408 offers the latest generation of the Peugeot i-Cockpit®, immediately recognizable by its small diameter steering wheel. The instrument panel is digital, with a diagonal of 10.0 inches, while the touch screen of the advanced infotainment system has the same size.

The range of engines with which the new Peugeot 408 is equipped includes two plug-in hybrid versions with 180 and 225 hp and a gasoline version with 130 hp. All three engines are available with the EAT8 eight-speed automatic transmission. A few months later, the range will be completed with a purely electric version. The system’s battery has a capacity of 12.4 kWh, charges in a 7.4 kW wallbox (the internal charger is of the same power) in about two hours.

Economy was one of the main concerns of the designers of the Peugeot 408. The joint effort to improve aerodynamics and reduce weight (from 1,396 kg), but also the development of engines with low emissions, resulted in the creation of a model that achieves extremely low average energy consumption (in approval process), whether it is in its hybrid versions or the 130 hp gasoline version.

The new Peugeot 408 will be launched on the market at the beginning of 2023. A car with ambitions of an international commercial career, which will be built initially for the European market in Mulhouse, France and soon after in the Chengdu factory, for the Chinese market.
