Opinion – Luis Kuang Jong Fong: China’s provocative actions are a challenge to the international order

by

With regard to China’s deliberate intensification, in many ways, of the military posture directed towards Taiwan recently, I would like to emphasize that China’s provocative actions pose a challenge to the international order and disrupt peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and the region.

In particular, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army announced impending live-fire military exercises and warned aircraft and vessels from other countries not to enter designated airspace and waters. These actions had an even more serious impact on international trade and the international legal order.

China’s military exercise is taking place in six air and sea zones around Taiwan, including the Taiwan Strait, the Bashi Channel, the East Sea and the Pacific Ocean, blocking 17 international channels and seven international ports in Taiwan.

Some military exercises will be invading our territorial sea and its contiguous zone, severely impacting maritime and air traffic around Taiwan.

I solemnly reiterate that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is an independent and sovereign country. The fact that neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the People’s Republic of China is subordinate to each other is internationally recognized and long-term status quo across the Taiwan Strait.

The government of Taiwan will even more firmly protect the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of China.

In light of the current situation, the Taiwanese government will proactively increase Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities. It will also continue to maintain close communication and coordination with the United States and other like-minded nations to jointly protect the rules-based international order, prevent an escalation in regional developments, and ensure security across the Taiwan Strait as well as peace. , stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.

Peace, stability and democracy, such important values, that Brazil and Taiwan have always shared and will never fail to do so.
