A bomb blast occurred at 01:35 in the early hours of the morning at a primary school in Zakaki.

According to the Police, members of the Police as well as a pyrotechnician rushed to the spot, according to which the explosion was due to the detonation of an improvised explosive object which was placed at the door base.

The blast caused extensive damage to the door and windows of the room, as well as to the windows of the adjoining room.

Damage was also caused to the windows of a nearby church.

It is worth noting that a second improvised explosive device was found which was detonated, but did not explode.

We condemn any criminal act and it is sad that you come to school in the morning, the bell rings and you do not see the babies entering the classroom “, said the President of the Parents’ Association of the 16th Primary School, Michalis Savvidis.

Speaking at the scene, Mr. Savvidis said that no one knows the reason for the installation of explosive devices in the school, nor whether it is related to the parents’ protests for the new restrictive measures in primary schools.

“We have not had any issues in the last few days, the situation at our school was calm,” he said, ruling out the possibility of parents whose children attend school.

As, on the other hand, the deputy spokesperson of ADE Limassol, Marinos Vassiliou, stated on the stage, “today at dawn at 1.30 there was an explosion at the entrance of a classroom of the primary school of Zakaki”.

“Members of the Police arrived at the scene where they blocked it and carried out various examinations,” he said, adding that “as it turned out, the explosion was due to a metal cylindrical explosive device, which was placed at the entrance of a classroom.”

The blast continued, causing extensive damage to both the hall and windows of the church of St. Barbara, opposite the school.

During the investigations, a second metal cylindrical object was found, which apparently exploded but did not explode and it is expected that, through the scientific examinations, it will give some answers about the details of the perpetrators.

Asked whether the second explosive device was larger than the one that exploded, Mr. Vassileiou replied that “it seems that the cylindrical object is large, but we can not calculate the damage it could cause if it finally managed to explode. ».

The examinations, he pointed out, are in the initial stages, closed monitoring circuits will be examined, testimonies from neighbors and neighbors will be evaluated and the necessary scientific examinations will be made on the evidence that has been identified.
