Political turmoil in Italy: Azione cancels electoral deal with centre-left

by

Calenda explained that his move is due to the fact that the “democrats” have decided to ally with forces, such as the Italian Left, which are clearly against the “agenda” of the Draghi government.

Carlo Calenda, leader of Italy’s centrist Azione (Action) party, announced a while ago on a program of Italian public television Rai that he will cancel the electoral agreement with the center-left Democratic Party.

Calenda explained that his move is due to the fact that the “democrats” have decided to ally with forces, such as the Italian Left, which are clearly against the “agenda” of the Draghi government.

At this particular stage, Azione secures 6% of the voter intention in a gallop and it is possible to agree, eventually, an electoral alliance with the small, centrist party “Live Italy”, of the Italian former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

“There was this possibility of cooperation with the Democratic Party, but their secretary, Enrico Lepta, made a different choice. I apologize to the Italians,” Calenda told Rai.

Under the new conditions, the Democratic Party, the Italian Left, the “Greens” and the Foreign Minister and former “five-star”, Luigi Di Maio, remain in the progressive alliance.
