Israel-Islamic Jihad Negotiations Advance in Gaza; death toll reaches 31

by

Negotiations for a temporary ceasefire between Israel and the radical Islamic Jihad group advanced on Sunday (7), the third day of air strikes on the Gaza Strip, mediated by Egypt. The agreement would start at 8 pm (2 pm in Brasília).

Diplomatic sources in Cairo mentioned by AFP and Reuters agencies, as well as by local newspapers, said that Israel had already accepted the proposal – there was, however, no official confirmation. Jihad, for its part, said that negotiations are ongoing on the matter.

The ceasefire would halt a series of attacks that have so far left at least 31 Palestinians dead, at least a third of them civilians, according to Gaza officials. Two jihadists were also killed, and on Sunday, Hamas said one of its members, Muhammad Afana, had died.

The bombings were launched by Israel on Friday in response to what Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s government described as terrorist threats to military and civilians by the Jihad. Days earlier, a leader of the group had been arrested, which escalated tensions in Gaza.

The radical group vowed to fight back, and on Sunday, alarms sounded in Jerusalem for the first time since the last escalation in the local conflict in May 2021, when 11 days of attacks left dozens of Palestinians dead. However, no casualties were reported.

The latest updated data from the Israel Defense Forces show that more than 780 rockets and mortars have been launched against Israel by Jihad since Friday. The Israeli Iron Dome system, however, would have been able to intercept all projectiles fired towards populated areas.
