Three people died Thursday night after being seriously injured by lightning outside the White House, and one is hospitalized with serious injuries.

James Mueller, 76, and Donna Mueller, 75, of Janesville, Wisconsin, were killed Thursday night in a lightning strike in Lafayette Park in the Northwest.

The couple, along with two other people, were outside the White House complex as a strong thunderstorm shook the area.

A third victim, a 29-year-old man, died Friday afternoon from his injuries, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

A fourth victim, a woman, is in critical condition as a result of the incident, police said. Her names have not been revealed.

Paramedics were called to the scene shortly before 7 p.m. and all four victims were taken to hospital with “serious, life-threatening injuries.”

Officials did not share specific information about how the people were injured, other than that they were seriously injured by lightning.

DC Fire and EMS Public Information Officer Vito Maggiolo was unable to determine the exact injuries.

According to NBC Washington, “What we do know for sure is that lightning struck very close to them and all four were injured.

All four were found near a tree near a statue of former President Andrew Jackson.

It is unknown what they were doing before the lightning struck and if they knew each other.

Following the tragedy, DC Fire and EMS warned DC residents and visitors to remain vigilant as thunderstorms are expected to continue through Friday.

White House Press Secretary Carine Jean-Pierre said: “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of life caused by lightning in Lafayette Park.

“My deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones and my prayers for those who are still fighting for their lives.”
