A British student has been left partially paralyzed after a terrifying bison attack.
Amelia Dean, known as Mia, was thrown into the air by an animal after being kicked in the leg.
A shocking incident occurred at Custer State Park in South Dakota.
Mrs. Dean, from Brockham, Surrey, had just arrived in the United States at the time of the attack.
It was the second day of the national sabbatical year.
A 19-year-old friend and her dog were walking through a state park when they saw bison grazing nearly 100 feet away.
They were “shocked and silenced” when he suddenly turned and charged.
One of the bison’s horns grazes his left thigh and he falls to the ground bleeding.
He is being treated in a hospital after being attacked by an animal.
Dean told South Dakota’s KOTA TV:
“It is a miracle that I did not get into the ambulance, much less my life and my legs.
“I can’t walk without a walker and crutches, I can’t walk very far.
The bison, one of 1,500 bison on the reservation, was with Dean after the incident.
His friends then courageously carried him away from the injured teenager.
Ms. Dean is being treated at Rapid City Hospital in South Dakota and is currently paralyzed from a nerve injury below her left knee.
Her parents Matthew and Jacqueline flew in to be by her side.
They said: ‘Mia was shocked and silenced’ [and] The bison stopped in front of me.
The two glared at each other for a moment before Bison lunged forward, stabbing his left thigh with a horn and dove on his heels about 10 to 15 feet in the air.
“When she hit the ground, Mia was pinned, unable to move her bloody leg, and Bison was right on top of her, his foot on her head for a bit.”
The Deans are trying to raise £140,000 to take Ms Dean to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for professional treatment.
Her parents said: “Mia is British and her travel insurance has so far paid for a femoral artery bypass, but refuses to even pay for an initial assessment by a nerve injury specialist.
Mayo Clinic, a world class hospital for peripheral neurology (a very specialized field) received a referral for Mia from Rapid City Hospital.
