Severe bad weather hit the Irpinia region of Lower Italy late this afternoon and as the country’s media reports “almost by a miracle, tragic consequences were avoided”.
In the town of Monteforte Irpino, due to heavy rain, the rushing waters swept away dozens of parked cars.
The mayor asked residents to stay indoors and no injuries have been reported so far. Many families were forced to leave their homes temporarily, with the help of the Fire Service and the Italian Civil Protection. Some drivers attempted to move their cars, but almost all were forced to abandon their efforts.
According to the forecasts of the Meteorological Service, extreme weather phenomena may affect the region of Irpinia, until tomorrow evening.
