Also, the illumination of the Christmas market in the town hall square will start as soon as night falls and not at dusk
The city of Vienna, famous for its Christmas markets and New Year’s concert, will not illuminate the Ring, its most famous boulevard, this year in order to save energy in the face of rising prices.
“There will be no Christmas lights this year on the Ring,” the ring road that surrounds the center of the Austrian capital, a spokeswoman for the mayor’s office, Roberta Kraft, told AFP today.
Also, “the illumination of the Christmas market in the town hall square will start as soon as night falls and not at dusk”, he added. “I.e. nearly an hour later every day on average.”
The city states that it has not calculated the energy that will be saved thanks to these measures.
On Friday, largely as a result of the fallout from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Austrian Energy Agency announced a 256%-plus increase in wholesale electricity prices in a year in Austria of nine million people.
In this central European tourist country, end-of-year celebrations are a major economic boost. Before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, at least four million people had visited the Christmas market in the town hall square in 2019.
In 2021, thirty shopping streets in Vienna were illuminated for seven hours a day from November 12th until early January.
