A untold Ukrainian treasure is in the hands of the Russians. As reported by the Washington Post, these are deposits worth trillions of dollars located in the eastern territories of Ukraine occupied by Russian forces.
The total value of the minerals found in Moscow-occupied territories is estimated at at least $12.4 trillion reports the American newspaper. More than 60% of coal deposits, 20% of gas deposits and more than 40% of metal deposits are concentrated in the occupied territories.
“After nearly six months of fighting, Moscow’s ‘hard-nosed’ war has yielded at least one major reward: expanded control over some of the most mineral-rich areas in Europe. Ukraine has some of the world’s largest reserves of titanium and iron ore, untapped lithium deposits and vast coal deposits. All of this is worth tens of trillions of dollars. The lion’s share of these coal deposits, which for decades have fed Ukraine’s crucial steel industry, are concentrated in the east, where Moscow has made the most advances. That put them in Russia’s hands, along with significant amounts of other valuable energy and mineral deposits used for a wide range of sectors, from aircraft parts to mobile phones, Canadian geopolitical risk firm SecDev points out, cited by WP.
“Russia has vast natural resources. But denying Ukraine its own has strategically undermined the country’s economy, forcing Kyiv to import coal to keep the lights on in cities and towns. Should the Kremlin succeed in annexing the Ukrainian territories it has seized — as US officials believe it will try to do in the coming months — Kyiv will permanently lose access to nearly two-thirds of its deposits. Ukraine would also lose myriad deposits of rare earths, natural gas and oil essential for some high-tech components – which could hamper Western Europe’s search for alternatives to imports from Russia and China.”
