The Taliban broke up a women’s demonstration in Kabul with fire

Demonstrators held a banner that read: “August 15 is a black day,” a reference to the date Kabul was captured in 2021 by the Taliban.

A peaceful protest by dozens of women, who marched through the streets of Kabul chanting “Bread, work and freedom”, was attacked and dispersed by gunfire in the air by Taliban forces.

Demonstrators held a banner that read: “August 15 is a black day,” a reference to the date Kabul was captured in 2021 by the Taliban.

Taliban in military uniforms and armed with weapons had blocked a crossroads in front of the protesters and began firing for several seconds into the air. According to an AFP journalist, one of them pretended to target the protesters, while some hit them with their weapons.

“We are here to protest for human rights in Afghanistan,” said 20-year-old protester Maryam Naiby. “I love my country. I will always be here”.

Women again took to the streets to denounce the restrictions imposed by the Taliban on their rights to education, work and freedom of movement. To date, no country has recognized the de facto government of the Taliban.
