The fire that raged for a week in early August at a fuel storage facility in the west Cuba cost the life 16 firefighters14 of which are impossible to identify, a coroner said.

Two firefighters died in the fire, while another fourteen were reported missing. Yesterday Jorge Gonzalez Perez, president of the Cuban Forensic Society, confirmed that the missing persons died at the scene of the disaster.

“Given that the remains found were exposed to very high temperatures for a long time, it is not possible to extract genetic material,” explained Mr. González Peres during a press conference.

The funerals of the fallen will be held tomorrow Friday, announced the presidency of Cuba, which also declared two days of national mourning.

The fire, which was caused by lightning, broke out on August 5 at a fuel storage facility in Matanzas, Cuba’s largest, 100 kilometers east of Havana. Four huge tanks, which they contained up to 52 million liters of crude oil or fuel oil, they burned. The facility had eight such tanks.
