Explosions earlier this month at the Saki airbase on the annexed Crimean peninsula have put more than half of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet fighter jets out of service, a Western official said today.
On August 9, multiple explosions occurred. at the air base located near the town of Novofyodorovka on the west coast of the peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014;
The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Ukraine is now achieving consistent “kinetic results” deep behind Russian lines, which is having a substantial impact on Russia’s logistical support and a “significant psychological effect on the Russian leadership.”
“We now estimate that what happened at the Saki airfield on August 9 disabled more than half of the Black Sea Fleet’s naval aviation fighters,” the official said.
The official said the Black Sea Fleet was struggling to operate as more than “a coast guard defense flotilla” that occasionally launches missile strikes and that its attempt to threaten an amphibious assault has been thwarted.
The official added that overall, the war is “right now at an operational standstill.”
“The ground forces of either side do not have sufficient concentrated combat capability to launch effective attacks that could in any way materially affect the course of the war,” the officer said.
