One of the members of the “Beatles”, the Islamic State jihadist group that specialized in kidnapping, torturing and executing Western hostages, was sentenced today to eight life sentences by a US court.
El Shafi el Sheikh, 33, a former British citizen, was found guilty last April of participating in the murders of four Americans, journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and aid workers Peter Kassig and Kayla Mueller. Judge T.S. Ellis announced that he had been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Foley, Sotloff and Kassing were beheaded and their executions were videotaped and publicized. According to US officials, Mueller was repeatedly raped by then-Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi before she was killed in Syria.
Another member of the cell, Alexandra Cotey, was also sentenced to life in prison earlier this year after pleading guilty to the murders of the four Americans. Mohammad Emouazi, also a member of the Beatles, was killed in Syria in 2015 in a joint US-British operation.
