The Danish Ministry of Health announced yesterday Friday the first case of monkeypox in the country involving a woman. It is one of five new cases confirmed in the last 24 hours in Denmark.
“This is an isolated case of infection of a woman,” said Danish Health Minister Magnus Hoenicke, adding that as the number of infections increases it is possible that there will be isolated cases in different population groups.
Until yesterday, cases of monkeypox in Denmark had only been reported in gay men. According to experts, with the exception of pregnant women, children and the immunocompromised, the risk of serious illness from monkeypox is low for the rest of the population.
Denmark’s health minister emphasized that the vaccination campaign has been extended to include everyone in a high-risk group.
Denmark’s parliament approved on August 12 the purchase of an additional 10,000 Imvamex monkeypox vaccines from Danish pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic, following a decision by health authorities to expand the vaccination program in the country.
The World Health Organization reported on August 17 that 176 women were infected with monkeypox across Europe. This number corresponds to approximately 1.1% of all cases in Geria Epirus.
