Twenty-two people have died since June in Chad due to floods caused by torrential rains, while those affected are estimated at around 110,000, reports the Agence France-Presse (AFP), citing a UN report.
“The torrential rains have killed 22 people and destroyed more than 22,000 hectares of farmland,” reports the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. “More than 110,000 people have been affected,” he adds.
The capital city of Djamena, which is located near the Sari River, is one of the areas hardest hit by the bad weather. Last August, more than 11,500 residents of the Chadian capital were displaced by floods.
According to UN figures, in 2021 some 5.5 million residents – more than 1/3 of the population in Chad – needed “urgent humanitarian assistance”. A situation that has now worsened due to the war in Ukraine and the months-long stoppage in Ukrainian grain exports.
Chad, which has faced several armed conflicts since gaining independence from France in 1960, is the third least developed country in the world, according to the United Nations.
At the beginning of last June, Chadian authorities declared a food “state of emergency”.
