Finland: Five men arrested for plotting ‘far-right terrorist attack’

by

Five young men have been arrested in Finland on charges of “plotting a terrorist act” with bombs and firearms, police say.

According to a spokesman for the Internal Security Service (Supo), the detainees, all “about 25 years old”, were supporters of “acceleration”, an extreme right-wing movement linked to white supremacists and mass murders in the United States. . Their goal was to sow racial division in society.

Authorities say this is the first arrest in Finland of an attempted far-right terrorist attack.

The suspects were arrested on Tuesday. They all lived in Cancκαnpaa, a town of 13,000 and today they were brought before a judge and remanded in custody.

It has not been revealed at the moment what their goal was.

All five have been under surveillance for two years since their first arrest, police said.

Searches in December 2019 revealed “a significant amount of weapons, ammunition and explosives,” said Police Chief Tony Sieblom. They were also found in possession of “terrorist material”, which “reinforces the belief that they were radicalized and there was reason to consider them suspects in terrorist crimes”.

Earlier in the afternoon, their arrest was announced on charges of “preparing a terrorist act”, without giving further details.
