Italy: New delusion from the far-right president, Giorgia Meloni

by

Referring to the need to support young people’s ability to exercise, Georgia Meloni included anorexia, bulimia and self-destructive tendencies among “behaviors that do not respect the norms of society”.

A new storm of reactions was caused by a video message from Giorgia Meloni, president of the far-right Brothers of Italy, as well as a “tweet” from the party itself.

Referring to the need to support young people’s ability to exercise, Georgia Meloni included anorexia, bulimia and self-destructive tendencies among “behaviors that do not respect the norms of society”.

Enrico Letta, the secretary of Italy’s center-left Democratic Party, described this position as unacceptable, and the “Democrats” MP, Filippo Sensi, added that “by calling anorexia and bulimia ‘inappropriate behaviours’, you show that you have neither trace of shame”.

“Conflating illnesses like anorexia with youth gangs and gambling addiction really leaves us dumbfounded. It means that he does not respect young people but, on the contrary, insults them,” said Paola Boldrini, vice-president of the Italian Senate’s health committee, a while ago.

Giorgia Meloni initially defended the position and her whole approach insisting that she had the health of young people as a point of reference, but the Brothers of Italy decided, in the end, to delete this particular “tweet”.
