The passengers and crew – all Italian – were rescued and are in good health

Dramatic scenes off the coast of southern Italy, with a 40 meter long super yacht to sink into the sea.

The reason for the “Saga”, which was built in 2007 and sailed from Gallipoli to Milazzo, Sicily.

While crossing Squillace Bay – at the toe of the Italian ‘boot’ – the captain sent out a distress signal late on Saturday night.

Four passengers and one crew member – all Italians – immediately disembarked from the yacht, leaving four other crew members, including the captain, behind as they tried to save the vessel.

A tugboat was then dispatched from Crotone to try to tow the Saga back to port in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The operation began but was interrupted as the boat it had taken a steep incline to the right.

Footage captured by the Italian Coast Guard showed the stern of the boat disappearing beneath the waves and water reaching its roof. The Saga finally sank around 1 p.m.

Finally, an investigation has been launched into the causes of the sinking.
