The US State Department attempted to discourage the former NBA champion Dennis Rodman from traveling to Russia to… broker the release of the imprisoned American WNBA star, Britney Greiner.
Rodman told NBC News on Saturday that he hoped this week to fly to Russia as part of an informal diplomatic effort to secure the freedom of Greiner, who was sentenced to nine years in prison for drug trafficking.
“I got permission to go to Russia to help this girl,” Rodman told NBC. He did not say from whom he got the permission, but State Department spokesman Ned Price insisted on Monday that any travel he takes will not be on behalf of the US government.
“We have made a substantial offer to Russia for the freedom of Paul Whelan and Brittney Greiner,” Price told reporters. “We believe that anything other than further negotiations through the established channel is likely to complicate and hinder these liberation efforts,” he added.
Rodman had personal contacts with him in the past Kim Jong Un in North Korea, while declaring that he “knows Putin well”.
