If you haven’t been affected by this summer’s rail strike, you may be the only one. In other parts of the country, the strike’s impact is widely felt.

While many still support the cause of the strike, it is safe to assume that people want the strike to end, especially with the cost of living raising taxes and inflation running above 10%.

For the rail workers to put this back together, there must be an agreement that meets everyone’s needs. That’s where people like Grant Shapps come in.

As Transport Minister, Shaps is a key figure in the debate. Here’s everything you need to know about MP…

Who is Grant Shaps and is he married?

His brother, Andre Shaps, was a musician and member of Big Audio Dynamite (BAD) from 1994 to 1998, and his cousin, Mick Jones, was a punk rock figure and member of The Clash.

Where is Grant Shaps as a member of Congress?

After several unsuccessful bids for Parliament since 1994, Shaps stood again in the 2005 general election and was elected Conservative MP for Welwyn Hatfield.

Grant Shaps political career

After David Cameron was appointed Prime Minister, Shaps was appointed Minister for Housing and Local Government.

In the 2012 Cabinet, he was promoted to the Cabinet as Conservative Speaker and Minister Without Portfolio.

In May 2015, he was demoted from the Cabinet to become Minister for International Development. In November 2015, he resigned from the Conservative Party following allegations of bullying.

He backed Boris Johnson’s bid for the Conservative leadership in 2019 and appointed Shapps as transport secretary when Johnson became prime minister.

Since Shaps took office, the effective nationalization of the Northern Trains franchise and recent negotiations amid a national strike have given him greater clout than under his predecessors.
