A former officer of the Metropolitan Police Department has been jailed for raping three teenagers during forced labour.
Anthony Paul Smith, 56, has left victims feeling “worthless and scared” after years of campaigning against sexual abuse.
The crimes against children aged 13 to 17 were committed between 1993 and 1997 at a Surrey address.
He was found guilty of 13 counts of rape and indecent sexual assault after a three-week trial at Guildford Criminal Court and sentenced to 24 years in prison.
Smith left the Met in 2004 after being convicted of gross indecency with a victim under the age of 16, which was not included in his most recent conviction.
The court heard that he was working as a swimming teacher in Llandudno, Wales, before joining the police in 1987.
An investigation was launched after one of the victims told police that Smith molested him as a teenager in 2020.
During the trial, all three victims testified about their crimes and how Smith “manipulated” and “controlled” them.
Describing the impact the abuse had on her life, one victim said, I am guilty and ashamed of what I had to do.
She continues:
“I am ashamed that I have been abused all my life and that it has negatively affected my intimate relationships.
“I know the abuse was not my fault, but survivors of childhood sexual abuse will never forget their shame.”
Surrey Police Detective Sergeant Matt Cable said: years later.
“The sentence he received today reflects the extent of his predatory behavior in that he targeted young girls and used them for his own gratification.
Seeing him behind bars to get on with their lives, knowing that these three women were finally brought to justice for their heinous and indefensible crimes.
“To anyone who has experienced any form of sexual abuse, I want to assure you that your opinion will always be heard and that all allegations will be thoroughly investigated.
