Vietnam’s Ministry of Health specifically said medical professionals should treat LGBTQ+ people with respect and ensure they are not discriminated against.
Being gay, bisexual or transgender should not be considered an illness and therefore need no treatment, Vietnam’s government has announced, taking a major step for the country in terms of LGBTQ+ rights there.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Health specifically said medical professionals should treat LGBTQ+ people with respect and ensure they are not discriminated against.
Specifically, in a notice sent to provincial and municipal health services earlier this month and posted on the government website, the ministry said being LGBTQ+ is “not exactly an illness” so it “cannot be ‘cured’ nor does it need to be ‘cured'” therefore there is nothing one can do to change it.
He emphasized that doctors should not “interfere with or force treatment” on LGBTQ+ patients.
If any support is needed, “it should be in the form of psychological help and provided only by those with knowledge of sexual identity,” the ministry said.
