Philippines: Three dead from tropical cyclone Ma-on

This is the sixth tropical cyclone to hit the Southeast Asian country this year.

At least three people died and four others were injured by him tropical cyclone Ma-onwhich hit the island of Luzon, the authorities announced today Philippines.

According to the authorities’ estimates, approx 50,000 people were affected from the cyclone in 400 villages of the island. With winds of up to 150 km/h, the tropical cyclone flooded roads, destroyed homes and snapped power and telecommunications cables in its wake.

THE Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr had ordered the closure of schools and government offices in the capital Manila and six other provinces on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the threat of Typhoon Ma-on.

This was the sixth tropical cyclone to hit the Southeast Asian country this year. The Philippines is one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to natural disasters, mainly because of its location on the so-called “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific and the powerful typhoons that hit the region.

On average, the Philippine archipelago is faced with 20 typhoons each year, some of which are powerful and destructive.

Last April, Tropical Storm Maggie caused floods and landslides in the Philippines, leaving 224 dead and 147 missing.
