At least one person was killed and at least 41 were injured in what became known as the Semero Volcano eruption on the island of Java as huge clouds of smoke and ash covered the area, officials said.
A video released by emergency services shows residents, including children, running to find safe shelter as clouds of smoke and ash rise to cover nearby villages in East Java.
The deputy head of the Lumajang district, Idah Masdar, said during a press conference that one person had been killed and 41 people had been burned.
Thousands of people were forced to flee their homes as the volcano erupted as rivers of lava flowed into their villages.
Authorities are setting up tents for residents who have evacuated their homes, the Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) said. However, evacuation operations are being hampered by dense smoke, said BNPB chief Suhariado.
“Many areas were plunged into darkness after being covered in volcanic ash,” said BNPB spokesman Abdul Mouhari.
The last major eruption of Semeros occurred in December 2020. It had caused the evacuation of thousands of people even then.
