“If they start creating problems … the response will be immediate,” the Belarusian president said.
THE President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko stated today that the SU-24 military fighter jets that his country has, they have modified to carry nuclear weapons and that Minsk will react immediately if the West causes any problems.
Lukashenko said he has agreed to modernize Belarus’ military aircraft with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Belarusian news agency Belta reported.
Belarus, a staunch ally of Russia, has no nuclear weapons of its own. Lukashenko did not go into detail on how the nukes would be moved from Moscow, which is using Belarusian territory to support what it calls a “special military operation” against Ukraine.
His remarks appear to have generally referred to a potential threat from the West.
“They must understand that if they provoke an escalation, neither helicopters nor planes will save them,” Lukashenko was quoted as saying.
“Everything is ready,” he said, referring to work on modifying military aircraft to be able to carry nuclear weapons.
“It is not a good idea to escalate things with Belarus because this could be an escalation with the Union State (of Russia and Belarus) which has nuclear weapons. If they start creating problems … the response will be immediate,” the Belarusian president said.
