All travelers from abroad to the UK must have a coronavirus diagnostic test within 48 hours of their trip from Tuesday.
The decision was made by the British government at a meeting of the steering committee for the pandemic on Saturday night.
The test can be a molecular type PCR or rapid test and should be performed by everyone regardless of vaccination schedule.
The measure, which returns to travelers’ obligations after months, follows the decision to subject visitors to the country to a PCR test within 48 hours of arrival and to require isolation until they receive a negative result.
Announcing the decision, Health Minister Sajid Javid said the decision was made due to the growing number of Omicron variants associated with travel.
According to Javid, 160 Omicron cases have now been identified in the UK.
Also, as of early Monday, Nigeria is placed on the red British travel list, which includes ten South African countries. As the British Minister of Health gently explained, it is the country with the second most Omicron cases after South Africa.
Now only British nationals and permanent residents of the United Kingdom will be admitted from Nigeria and those with a ten-day quarantine obligation in a hotel.
