Capacity at Paks plant more than doubled – “This is a big step, an important milestone,” said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto
The Russian nuclear energy giant Rosatom will start building two new nuclear reactors in Hungary in the coming weeks, its foreign minister said Hungary.
The agreement reached between them of Russia and EU state in 2014, aims to expand the existing Paks nuclear plant.
Russia’s nuclear industry has not been subjected to EU sanctions for the invasion of Ukraine, while the moves to isolate and sanction its oil and gas exports have not been unconditionally supported by Hungary. The Paks site currently produces 40% of Hungary’s electricity.
“Let the construction begin!” said the foreign minister Peter Szijjarto in his Facebook post.
With the two additional reactors, the nuclear plant – which currently consists of four Soviet-built reactors – will more than double its capacity.
“This is a big step, an important milestone,” Mr Szijjarto said in a Facebook post. “In this way we will ensure Hungary’s energy security in the long term and protect Hungarians from wild fluctuations in energy prices,” he added.
He also stressed that the nuclear reactors could be ready for operation by 2030.
The 12.5 billion euro project (£10.6bn, $12.4bn) is largely funded by Russia.
