These “light and autonomous” unmanned underwater vehicles “were designed for use in shallow coastal environments” and are “capable of operating effectively at depths of up to 100 meters to detect, locate and identify mines (…) so that the Ukrainian Navy to be able to neutralize them”, explained the British Ministry of Defense in the press release it published.
The UK government announced on Saturday that it would deploy six underwater drones to Ukraine to help it neutralize sea mines planted by Russia off its coast and train Ukrainian military personnel to operate them.
According to the same source, “dozens of members of the Ukrainian Navy will be trained in the use of these drones during the coming months, training has already begun for the first of them.” Training in their use will be carried out by British and US military personnel.
The granting of this military aid was announced as, always according to the British Ministry of Defence, “Russia is turning food into a weapon by destroying Ukrainian agriculture and imposing a blockade on the country’s Black Sea ports to prevent its export.”
Although some cargo ships carrying grain have been able to leave Ukraine under the terms of a UN-brokered deal, food exports are “being hampered by sea mines laid by Russian forces along the coast,” according to London.
In May, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced 300 million pounds (355 million euros) worth of military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, following a previous 450 million pound package of mostly missiles.
