President Joe Biden paid tribute to the 13 military personnel killed at Hamid Karzai Airport during the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan just a year ago.
The attack occurred at the gate of the Hamid Karzai Airport Monastery in Kabul at 7:30 pm on August 26, 2021.
“They were heroes who worked to save lives as part of the largest airlift operation in our history,” Biden said Friday morning. He will live forever as a testimony of
More than 100 Afghan civilians were also killed in the bombardment.
The Islamic State-State of Khorasan (ISIS-K) has claimed responsibility for the terror attacks. Militant groups have carried out several high-profile attacks against civilians in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and the Taliban also view ISIS-K as an enemy.
The attacks came just weeks before the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the worst in US history.
Biden said the United States will continue its efforts to combat terrorism abroad without maintaining an occupation of Afghanistan.
“My administration will continue to hunt down terrorists wherever they seek to harm America,” Biden said.
He cited the recent assassination of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zahrawi on August 1 as evidence that this approach worked.

The United States Marine Corps (USMC) also celebrated its attack anniversary. Of the 13 soldiers killed in the attack, 11 were Marines.
The US Marines called the attack “courageous” and praised the soldiers’ “calm and determination” in the chaos of the retreat.
“Amidst the chaos and bloodshed, they were dispatched to Hamid Karzai International Airport and acted with a courage, selflessness and professionalism that the word ‘marines’ does not extinguish,” they said.
The Marine Corps called the soldier’s actions in Afghanistan an “honorable chapter” in the branch’s legacy.
“The Afghan Marines will always be known as ruthless, tough, adaptable and tough warriors,” they added.
