Turkish authorities arrested the well-known pop singer, following outrage over her on-stage comments about graduates of religious high schools, which were criticized by secular circles in the country as a practice common to theocratic regimes.
During her concert last April, she had jokingly said: “He’s a pervert, he’s come out of preacher schools.”
The singer’s reference to perversion is linked to recent revelations about the rape of minors in religious boarding schools and catechetical Koran reading tutorials.
