UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will travel to Pakistan next week in “a show of solidarity” with flood victims after unprecedented floods swept through the country, his spokesman announced today.

“Given the tragic situation facing the millions of men, women and children affected by the unprecedented floods in Pakistan, the Secretary-General will travel to the country next week for a solidarity visit,” Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing.

Guterres is expected to arrive in Islamabad on September 9, before visiting “the areas most affected by this unprecedented climate disaster” where he will meet mainly displaced families and humanitarian organizations working on the ground.

In the face of this devastation, Antonio Guterres insisted today when he appealed for donations of $160 million to finance the most urgent needs, the need to fight global warming.

“As we continue to see more and more extreme weather events, it is outrageous that climate action is freezing while global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, putting all of us – everywhere – at increasing risk,” he said in a video message. .

“Today it is Pakistan. Tomorrow, it could be your country,” he warned.

Tens of millions of Pakistanis have been affected by monsoon rains that have fallen non-stop since June, inundating a third of the country and killing more than 1,100 people, including 380 children, as army helicopters rescued stranded families and dropped food parcels in hard-to-reach areas.

The devastating floods that have affected more than 33 million people are “the worst in Pakistan’s history”, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said today. “The damage caused to our infrastructure is massive and extends across Pakistan,” he said.

Meanwhile, the US embassy in Islamabad announced that the United States would provide $30 million in aid to Pakistan following heavy rains and floods.

“The United States, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), today announced an additional $30 million in vital humanitarian assistance to support people and communities affected by severe flooding in Pakistan,” the statement said.
