Man arrested for ‘activating hidden camera in beach bathroom’

A man has been arrested on suspicion of hiding a camera in a false fire alarm in a public restroom.

Dana Alan Caruso, 58, was arrested after Public Works officials discovered a new fire alarm in her family’s bathroom on Sanibel Island, Florida.

WCVB reported Sunday that police were called after workers confirmed that fire alarms had not been set off by a public works project.

Multiple people were recorded visiting Bowman Beach on July 28 and using the family bathroom, according to police.

Police Chief William Dalton said: “We want to identify the victims of this crime so that additional charges can be brought against the suspects.”

During the investigation, police named Caruso as a suspect and obtained a search warrant for his arrest on August 9.

Caruso, a New Hampshire native, was arrested at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Aug. 19. She has been charged with multiple felonies and one felony voyeurism and is awaiting extradition to Florida.

Police said they had not previously released information about the incident as it could jeopardize the investigation.

“The suspect traveled to different parts of Florida and our detectives responded quickly with the help of the State Attorney’s Office and the Lee County Sheriff’s Department,” Dalton said.

“I had to focus on the investigation until he was arrested.”

Sanibel is on the coast of Fort Myers. Police have reported the incident to every department in Southwest Florida so they can check restrooms on site.

This is not the only recent incident involving hidden cameras in the United States.

In March, an Airbnb host in Comfort, Texas, faced 15 invasion of privacy complaints. Jay Ali allegedly recorded over 2,000 videos and images of people staying in short-term rental cabins.
