Starting tomorrow, Thursday, it will be forbidden to walk with a weapon, even a concealed one, in the famous square Times Square of Manhattan, as well as in many other public spaces in New York State and City, authorities announced today.

The new law, passed and approved this summer by Gov. Kathy Hokul and Mayor Eric Adams (both Democrats), goes into effect on September 1st.

The measure is the reaction of New York and other Democratic-controlled states, such as California, to the “scandalous” decision of the conservative-majority Supreme Court, which accepted as constitutional the right of Americans to go out armed their house.

“The Supreme Court’s decision was a shot that rang out around the world,” said Eric Adams, the former police chief who has made combating gun violence a priority of his time in the city. “The City of New York will defend itself against this decision and, starting tomorrow, new conditions apply to having the right to carry a concealed weapon in sensitive areas, such as Times Square,” he explained.

A sign reading “Times Square: Gun Free Zone” will be placed in the iconic square in the heart of Manhattan. About 50 million visitors pass through this area every year.

The governor said guns, even concealed in holsters, bags or the owner’s pocket, would also be banned “in bars, libraries, schools, public services and hospitals” in the region. Hokul added that she “refuses to abdicate her duty, which is to protect New Yorkers from gun violence.”

The prohibitions do not concern the forces of order.

On June 23, the Supreme Court overturned the “restrictions” on gun ownership that had been in place in New York since 1913, at a time when the US was recording an explosion of crime in major cities and two deadly attacks, in Buffalo (10 dead) and at a school in Texas (21 dead, of which 19 were young students).
