Last Friday, Austin Bellamy was pruning a cherry tree when he unwittingly cut a bee hive.

A 20-year-old man is hospitalized in a comatose state, who – according to his relatives – was stung by killer bees more than 20,000 times.

Fox 19 reported that on Tuesday night, Austin Bellamy was intubated and placed in an induced coma at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in Ohio.

“He is fighting for his life,” his mother, Shona Carter, said on a fundraising website page where she asked for donations to pay for hospitalizations.

Last Friday, Austin Bellamy was pruning a cherry tree when he unwittingly cut a bee hive. These insects, also known as “Africanized bees”, are particularly aggressive.

Austin’s grandmother and uncle, who were by his side, saw the attack but were unable to intervene as they themselves became targets of the bees. “He was screaming, ‘help, help,’ and nobody could help him,” said his grandmother, Phyllis Edwards. “I was trying to climb the ladder to reach him” but “I couldn’t because I was surrounded by bees,” he added.

Sona Carter said the young man was stung more than 20,000 times and swallowed about 30 bees. Nurses were “taking the bees off him until Sunday morning,” she said.

Doctors believe Austin Bellamy will make a full recovery.
