Myanmar Court on Monday sentenced deputy leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison for inciting dissent against the military and breaking health regulations regarding COVID-19, a spokesperson for COVID-19 said. advice to AFP.

Suu Kyi “was sentenced to two years in prison under section 505(b) and two years in prison under the natural disasters law,” said Zaw Min Tun, a spokesman for the military junta that governs Myanmar.

Former President Win Myint was also sentenced to four years on the same charges, the spokesman said, clarifying that they would not yet be arrested.

Suu Kyi, 76, has been detained since the military ousted her government on Feb. 1, ending a brief period of democracy in Myanmar.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner could face decades in prison if convicted on all counts.

Journalists do not have access to the special court and Suu Kyi’s lawyers are prohibited from talking to the press.

More than 1,300 people have died and more than 10,000 have been arrested in cracking down on dissidents since the coup, according to a local monitoring group.
