Local authorities believe the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel

Four people were killed and eight others were injured when a van carrying workers from upstate New York to their homes crashed overnight on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Englewood Cliffs.

Local authorities believe the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel causing the car to swerve and crash into trees along the highway.

A total of seven ambulances rushed to the scene along with Palisades Interstate Parkway police and fire rescue units who extricated half of the victims.

AirMed One from Hackensack University Medical Center airlifted one of the survivors after landing at Witte Field in Englewood Cliffs, responders said.

Of the eight total survivors, most were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center and the rest to Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and Jersey City Medical Center.

The four dead were found to have died on the spot.
