The attempted assassination of the Argentine vice president this Thursday (1st) highlighted what the newspaper La Nación called “serious failures of the Federal Police”, which would have allowed the attacker to stay within inches of Cristina Kirchner.
Although the number of security guards for Cristina was higher in recent days, there was no containment cordon that imposed a distance between the public and the vice president, a measure that would have left the shooter further from his target. According to La Nación, the security operation of a president or head of state consists of rings or perimeters guarded by security.
The federal police officers who guarded Cristina were in plain clothes and, “instead of monitoring the environment to look for any possible threat, they dedicated themselves to looking at the vice president, in a passive attitude and only to contain the protesters. None of the guardians took the threat into consideration,” wrote reporter Gustavo Carabajal.
In addition, as can be seen in the video of the attendant that circulated on social media, the police did not protect the deputy in the moments after the attack, nor did they set up an escape corridor that would allow her to leave, thus disregarding the possibility of a second shooter.
According to La Nación, Cristina would be guarded by almost 100 police officers, after an increase of 20 in the last four days, and only the president, Alberto Fernández, has more staff. The body responsible for protecting the deputy is a division commanded by the Federal Police.
The Justice classified the attack, committed by Brazilian Fernando Andrés Sabag Montiel, as an attempted murder, and stated that he is in a position to testify, which could happen as early as this Friday (2).
In his house, 100 bullets were found in two boxes of 50 projectiles, in addition to his identity and documents from his girlfriend — the police arrived at the scene, in the satellite city of Buenos Aires, San Martín, after a tip from a person who went to the police station. at dawn.
In addition, the judge responsible for the case, María Eugenia Capuchetti, has already ordered the investigation of the weapon with which Sabag Montiel tried to shoot the vice president. The shooter already had a police record, for possession of a knife in March last year.
