Gazprom: The restart of Nord Stream depends on Siemens

You should probably ask Siemens that question, it needs to repair equipment first, Gazprom’s deputy CEO said.

Restoring the smooth operation of the Nord Stream gas pipeline from Russia to the European market will not be possible until Siemens Energy repairs faulty equipment, Gazprom Deputy CEO Vitaly Markelov told Reuters news agency today.

“You should probably put that question to Siemens, they have to repair equipment first,” Mr. Markelov said when asked about its pipeline. Gazprom on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in the Russian port of Vladivostok.

Yesterday the Russian gas giant announced that it had received a warning from the Russian authorities that the Portovaya compressor station, which sends natural gas to Germany via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, no longer meets safety requirements. According to the relevant information, the Portovaya station is now a “dangerous production unit” and cannot operate legally.

Last Friday, Gazprom announced that it had detected an oil leak in the only operating turbine at the Portovaya station and that it was forced to suspend natural gas deliveries until repair work was completed. He even cited Siemens Energy, which has undertaken maintenance on the Nord Stream 1 turbines, that “the causes of the oil leak can only be ruled out by a specialized repair company.”

On Saturday, Siemens Energy said it had not been commissioned to carry out the work and that the problem reported by Gazprom does not normally affect the operation of a turbine and that technicians could seal the leak on site. He even added that there are other available turbines at the particular station.

Today Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow’s position that the problems that have arisen in Russian natural gas deliveries are a result of Western sanctions.

Europe has accused Russia of “tooling” energy resources in retaliation for Western sanctions imposed on it after the invasion of Ukraine.
