Britain: The choices of Liz Truss for the government – The first reactions

Children of immigrants in key ministries – Ben Wallace remained in Defence

The choices of the new Prime Minister of Britain caused a sensation Liz Truss for the top ministries of her government, since Ben Wallace is the only white man. Wallace remains defense secretary as his handling of the Ukraine war crisis was deemed successful.

THE Quasi Kwarteng – whose parents emigrated from Ghana in the 1960s – is Britain’s first black Chancellor of the Exchequer.

THE James Cleverly – whose mother is from Sierra Leone and whose father is British – is also the first black head of British diplomacy. The new foreign secretary has revealed that he was a victim of bullying as a child and has repeatedly stressed that the Conservative Party must do more to attract black voters.

THE Suella Braverman – whose parents immigrated from Kenya and Mauritius six decades ago – succeeds Priti Patel in the Home Office, where she will manage immigration, among other things.

Until a few decades ago, British governments were mainly made up of white men. THE Rishi Sunak – whose parents are of Indian origin – was Kwarteng’s predecessor at the Treasury and Liz Truss’s opponent in the final round of voting to succeed Boris Johnson.

It should be noted, however, that only a quarter of Conservative MPs are women and 6% from minority backgrounds.

The Conservatives have elected all three of Britain’s female prime ministers: Margaret Thatcher, Theresa May and now Liz Truss. The first British MP of Asian descent, Madcherjee Bownagry was also from the Conservative Party.
