Argentine court accuses Brazilian and girlfriend and says attack on Cristina was planned

The girlfriend of the Brazilian who tried to kill Argentina’s vice president, Cristina Kirchner, will also answer for attempted murder, the court announced on Wednesday. The announcement comes a day after the suspect, Fernando Sabag Montiel, said Brenda Uliarte was not involved in the bombing.

But, according to the prosecution, the attack was planned by the two. Uliarte, 23, by the way, was close to Sabag, 35, during the attack and passed by the door of Cristina’s house, in the Recoleta neighborhood, days before her boyfriend’s action. There are, however, no details on what she did in the region.

In addition, the Argentine police point out that both had the murder weapon since August 2021. On Tuesday (6), the Argentine press released photos of the young woman with a pistol in her waist – the record is from May 8.

Investigators point out that the weapon would be the same used by Sabag on Thursday (1st) and that the scenario of the records resembles his last address, which contradicts the information that she moved there in August. The two were not authorized to carry the pistol.

The images were found on the Brazilian’s cell phone SIM card. The device itself had its data apparently erased while it was under police analysis, prompting a separate investigation.

The charges against Uliarte were read during the young woman’s testimony to the judge in the case, María Eugenia Capuchetti, on Tuesday night. At the time, Uliarte denied participating in the attack and only answered questions from his lawyer, in order to defend himself. The young woman said that she does not agree with the attack and that she considers it abominable, even though she talks about political differences with Cristina.

Sabag, in turn, refused to answer questions from the Justice twice – this Tuesday and hours after the attack. Police are investigating whether more people participated in the decision to attack Cristina, although they do not believe it is a large organization.

According to the Argentine state news agency Télam, the couple was also accused of stockpiling two boxes of ammunition, each containing 50 32-caliber automatic cartridges. The material was seized on Friday (2) after a search and seizure in Sabag’s apartment.

Other photos accessed by investigators show the Brazilian holding a weapon similar to the one used in the attack perpetrated against Cristina and ammunition corresponding to those used in the attack. The Brazilian would have had the bullets a year ago.

Also according to Télam, the couple falsified disability certificates from the Argentine Ministry of Health before the attack – the documents, which had their names on them, were found in Sabag’s apartment. The relationship between the falsification and the episode is uncertain.
