by

The Ukrainian army is approaching the cities of Izium, Kupyansk and Veliky Burluk

A Russian occupation official in the Kharkiv region announced today that civilians were being evacuated from three occupied cities where Ukraine launched a surprise counterattack.

Vitaly Gadzev told Vladimir Solovyov’s daily show on state television that cities are being evacuated Izium, Kupyansk and Veliki Burluk.

The evacuation, he noted, mainly concerns Kupiansk and Izium. “Now we learn that Veliki Burluk is being shelled by artillery and therefore, of course, citizens have been asked to leave for safer settlements,” he added.

If there are problems with the relocation of these people o Gadchev said he would seek help from authorities in Belgorod, southern Russia.

Kupyansk and Izium are vital hubs in the Russian military’s supply chain in the Donbas region. Both cities are under threat from the spectacular counter-offensive launched by Kyiv, which claims to have penetrated up to 50km into Russian lines this week.

The Institute for the Study of Warbased in the US, earlier predicted that Ukrainian forces would retake Kupyansk within the next 72 hours.

Speaking earlier on Russian television, Gadchev admitted that Ukrainian forces had achieved a “significant victory” in the Kharkiv region.
