‘Peaceful end to a reign of 70 years’, thanks and duty accomplished; see the covers about the queen

by

Newspapers around the world brought, on their front page, the death of Queen Elizabeth II, this Friday (9). The monarch died on Thursday (8), and her eldest son takes over as King Charles III.

The queen’s burial should take place in the coming weeks, while Charle III will be proclaimed this Saturday (10). His coronation, however, still has no date set — and it could be more than a year from now.

On its cover, the British newspaper Telegraph carries a more recent photo of the monarch with a quote from the queen: “mourning is the price you pay for love”.

The cover of the British tabloid The Guardian and the newspaper The Times, portrayed the same photo of Queen Elizabeth II, during her coronation in 1953. Elizabeth II only underwent the rite almost a year and a half after being ascended to the throne, in 1952. The ceremony was the first of its kind to be televised in history.

Other European publications such as the French Le Figaro, the Spanish El País and the British Daily Morror carried the headlines “Farewell to the Queen”, “Elizabeth 2 Dies” and “Thank you”. The Americans The Wall Streat Journal, The New York Times and The Washington Post paid tribute to the queen with titles such as “A Pillar of Duty and Devotion”.

The Japan Times illustrated the newspaper’s front page with the headline
