King Charles will be formally announced as the new monarch in a traditional ceremony later today.

The Accession Council meets at St James’s Palace, where courtiers read from the balcony a proclamation publicly announcing him as King.

It is accompanied by celebrations such as fireworks over Hyde Park and the Tower of London, and the sound of trumpets played on trumpets.

A camera witnesses a meeting scheduled for 10:00 am, making it public for the first time.

Charles automatically became king when his mother died, but tradition dictates that a council must be held and made official shortly after the monarch’s death.

This normally occurs within 24 hours, but the travel required to and from Balmoral made this virtually impossible.

The Queen, Lady Camilla, and the Prince and Princess of Wales, Kate and William, will be in attendance.

Due to space limitations, only 200 of the approximately 700 members will be invited, and former prime ministers and ministers will be present.

The Privy Council, which is by convention in session (a quirk introduced by the impatient Queen Victoria), addresses the King about the Queen’s death.

The reading of the main decree by the King of the Garter from a position overlooking the French court is scheduled for 11:00.

That would lead to a series of similar questions across the country, with another at London’s Royal Exchange on Saturday afternoon and more announced in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales on Sunday afternoon.
