The Ukrainian army has liberated the strategic town of Izium in eastern Ukraine, where Ukrainian forces have launched a counter-offensive that has broken through Russian defense lines, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced overnight.
Ukrainian officer Yury Kochevenko sent a message of victory from the strategically important central square city of Izium which Ukrainian forces recaptured from the Russians.
“In the central square of Izium. The local command post is still burning. Everything over here is ruined. But that’s okay, we’ll rebuild everything. Izium was, is and always will be Ukraine. Trust the Ukrainian forces. (residents: “Glory to Ukraine! Glory to our heroes!”) Can you hear that? (residents: “Ukraine above all!”) You saw how the locals welcome us”

During his daily address on the 200th day of the war, Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the Ukrainian soldiers “for liberating hundreds of our towns and villages (…) most recently Balaklia, Izium and Kupyansk.”
