Military operation continues until targets are met, Peskov says after Ukraine’s territorial gains

by

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said that Russia sees no prospects for peace talks with Ukraine and no basis for such talks.

The Kremlin insisted today that Russia will succeed them its military targets in Ukrainein the first public response to Ukraine’s significant battlefield gains.

THE Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment directly when asked if President Vladimir Putin had confidence in his military leadership, saying the “special operation” would continue until it achieved its goals.

“The military operation continues”Peskov said. “And it will continue until the goals that were originally set are achieved.”

“Of course, any military actions carried out as part of the special operation are reported to the Supreme Commander,” Peskov said, referring to Putin.

“The president is in constant communication with the defense minister and all military commanders. Nothing else can be done during the special military operation,” he added.

It was the first reaction from the Kremlin to the Ukrainian counteroffensive last week, in which Kyiv claims it has recaptured more than 3,000 square kilometers of territory in just a few days.

Asked whether Putin would order general mobilization in response to Ukraine’s counteroffensive, Peskov referred the question to the Defense Ministry.

So far Putin has not resorted to conscripting Russia’s reserve units, which number about 2 million men who have served in the military in the past five years.

Peskov also stated that Russia sees no prospects for peace talks with Ukraine or a basis for such talks.

He said there were no discussions on possible demilitarization of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant — one of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) key recommendations since it visited the facility this month.

The Ukrainians’ quickly gained ground in the Kharkiv region has left Moscow facing its most serious defeat since being pushed out of the outskirts of the capital Kyiv in April. The advance deprived Russia of important logistics centers it used to supply its forces in eastern Ukraine.

Moscow’s near-total silence on the defeat — or lack of explanation for what happened in northeastern Ukraine — has angered some pro-war commentators and Russian nationalists on social media.
