The government will create a fund to pay the bills of citizens who were forced to change contracts this year, signing a more expensive one, and who can prove that they are unable to pay their bills.
THE government of the Netherlands is to allocate at least 150 million euros in order to prevent some consumers from being unable to pay their increased energy billsthe Dutch network RTL reported today, citing government sources.
The government will create a fund to pay the bills of citizens who were forced to change contracts this year, signing a more expensive one, and who can prove that they are unable to pay their bills.
The fund will be partly financed by energy providers, as it will protect them from bankruptcy in the event that their customers do not pay their bills, according to RTL.
Details of the plan are expected to be announced on Friday.
Opposition parties have repeatedly criticized Prime Minister Mark Rutte for not doing enough to support citizens struggling to pay their energy bills.
Last week Dutch media reported that the government is set to announce it will provide around 16 billion euros in 2023 in a bid to help consumers cope with skyrocketing food and energy prices. But Rutte declined to go into detail about the plan, which will be announced on September 20 alongside the government’s budget.
